From User Experience Survey to Culture Change Training Programme for a Healthcare Institution

The Client

SingHealth is Singapore’s largest public healthcare provider with an extensive array of more than 40 clinical specialties, a highly dedicated and driven team of 28,000 healthcare professionals and staff, and strong research and education capabilities. It is committed to putting patients at the heart of all it does. SingHealth institutions span from primary to acute care – aiming to ensure that patients remain well-supported while journeying from one care setting to another. It seeks to build a strong care network with partners to enable the Singapore population to receive the right care close to their homes.

With a rapidly ageing population, SingHealth commissioned Tsao Foundation in 2010 was to conduct an evaluative research project to survey, evaluate and improve the age-friendliness of its ambulatory centers. Tsao Foundation collaborated with ECI’s Founder and Dr Emi Kiyota, Founder of IBASHO on the project.

The Solution Designed by ECI

To gather data to evaluate the age-friendliness of the institutions, ECI co-designed the survey questions and conducted the field surveys with key stakeholders including the patients, caregivers and frontline employees. To ensure the reliability of the survey, ECI had to train and ensure that the field staff shared a common understanding of the questions and the answers. To ensure the validity of the data collected, ECI used stratified random sampling for this evaluative study. Upon the completion of the data collection, ECI proceeded to turn the raw data into relevant information that could be used in the evaluation. Working closely with Dr Kiyota and Tsao Foundation, a set of guidelines were recommended based on the research findings.

Following that, ECI worked to design a series of highly experiential and interactive culture change workshops and coaching sessions to equip staff members of SingHealth with an age-friendly mindset, the necessary knowledge and tools to be more age-friendly and to turn their workplaces to become more age-friendly.
